Robert R. Moore Artist Statement

I’ve done several forms of art, using several different mediums. The experience was thoroughly enjoyed in most cases, but definitely not all. I still dabble in Abstracts, Cubism, and Expressionism and am constantly experimenting. Having said all that; I don’t try to claim that Realism is the only way to paint or even the best. For me it is the most satisfying. I have often used the realism of Nature to help solve some of the most interesting challenges in my paintings. The strong images of my mind and memories, along with nature and tradition have helped me along the way to eventually arrive at the method of painting I most enjoy.
I work mainly in acrylics because of the fast drying time; I’m too impatient to wait for oils to dry. With acrylics I can get the effects of heavy paint like oils or the transparent effect obtained by watercolors or can use a combination of both effects. All with a quick drying time.
Most of the Wildlife I portray is painted in a tight Realistic style. My backgrounds however, can be a combination of the realism of nature along with what I might perceive as possible or impossible for that matter. This effect depends on how the painting progresses in my mind. Colours, glazing, layering and brush work all add to the effects I express in my paintings.
I suppose you could call my work “Expressive Realism” (to use an “ism”) in some cases. There is always something of myself in each of my paintings either in feeling or content. Nature provides an external reference and my imagination and memories supply my internal reference. Each time I start a new painting it’s an adventure into these references.
